Propagation and dynamics of epigenetics states

Regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes occurs in the context of chromatin. Chromatin itself is connected with a variety of measurable characteristics of a gene locus such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, DNA replication and spatial position in the nucleus, all of which are assumed to be highly dynamic during cellular differentiation and transformation.

Our research aims to delineate how these nuclear events modulate gene expression in higher eukaryotes and how their mis-regulation can contribute to disease. We are using Drosophila and mammalian cells as model systems and combine a molecular biology approach with a genome-wide experimental readout. The resulting datasets are transformed into comprehensive chromosomal maps in order to gain insights into sequence and structure determinants and interaction between network members.
