Electron microscopy

FMI has acquired in collaboration with C-CINA (Biozentrum, Basel) a Serial Block Face Scanning Electron Microscope (SBFSEM). This electron microscope (FEI) is equipped with a microtome (GATAN) in order to cut and image automatically inside the microscope. This technique developed by W. Denk (Horstman and Denk, Plos 2004) allows the imaging of 3D volumes at the ultrastructural level.

This technique is offering the FMI and the Biozentrum the opportunity to develop correlation microscopy, 3D reconstruction of large volume as well as quantitative electron microscopy. Most projects require light microscopy and advanced image processing as well, and are hence usually conducted in close collaboration with the Imaging and Light Microscopy sections of the facility (FAIM).
