Research Laboratory Technician - Group Lüthi

The group of Prof. Andreas Lüthi at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research is seeking a motivated and experienced research technician to support an SNSF Ambizione-funded project led by Dr. Nanci Winke. The project investigates how genetically defined neuronal populations in the basolateral amygdala contribute to emotional evaluation and guide motivated behaviour. The position is available immediately for a fixed term of three years at a 50% employment rate.

Our laboratory applies a multidisciplinary and integrated experimental approach in mice. We combine electrophysiological, imaging and behavioral techniques with advanced computational approaches to investigate the function of neuronal networks driving internal states, with an emphasis on the amygdala and interacting brain areas.

In this role, you will:

  • Handle and monitor experimental mice, including routine health checks, body-weight monitoring, and care of animals under approved water-restriction protocols.
  • Support and perform behavioural training and testing of freely moving mice in approach/avoidance and decision-making tasks, including accurate record-keeping.
  • Perform stereotaxic surgeries and histological processing, including tissue slicing, immunostaining and fluorescent microscopy).
  • Support evolving project needs within the lab through a range of tasks.

About you

  • You hold a Master’s degree in biology or a related field, or have completed training as a laboratory technician or assistant.
  • You have hands-on experience with mice and relevant accreditations (LTK/FELASA). Experience with neuroscience techniques, such as stereotaxic surgeries, behavioral experimentation, and histological processing, is highly desirable.
  • A careful, reliable, and well-organized approach to animal welfare, experimental protocols, and data documentation.
  • You are open to learning new techniques and skills and apply them to a high standard.
  • You are reliable, can demonstrate a strong work ethic and have high levels of motivation.
  • You are comfortable working independently while adapting to changing needs.
  • You are well-organized and can demonstrate strong planning skills
  • You communicate clearly and effectively in English.

 What we offer

  • A competitive compensation and benefit package.
  • Access to training in both traditional and cutting-edge neuroscience and mouse-related techniques, providing you with valuable skills for advancing your future career.
  • A dynamic, international and multidisciplinary environment that strives to be inclusive to people from diverse backgrounds.
  • A friendly, supportive and competent team.

How to apply

Please submit your application electronically at www.fmi.ch/opening. Be sure to include:

  • A letter of motivation
  • Your CV including your research experience
  • The names and contact details of 2-3 referees

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. For further information, please contact Dr. Nanci Winke at nanci.winke@fmi.ch.
